According to a survey carried out last year on the internet, people amazingly have a high tolerance for homes with a haunted past. Among the respondents, 32 % would consider buying a haunted house while 33% might consider the question and finally, 35% would definitely refuse to consider purchasing a property rumored to be haunted.

It is a fact: the human brain has always been fascinated by paranormal issues. Things that are enigmatic and inexplicable by neither science nor common sense tend to lure people’s mind more easily. 1. Thousand Islands Mansion – Carleton Villa - Canada

Constructed in 1895 over a 6-acre for William O. Wyckoff, President of Remington Arms and Typewriter Company, the Carleton Villa is located on the tip of Thousand Islands where St. Lawrence River flows into Lake Ontario on the Canada-U.S border. Being one of the first properties built in the Thousand Islands, the Carleton Villa has stayed uninhabited for more than 60 years. William O. Wyckoff died on the July 7 1895 of a heart attack at the age of 60 on his first night in the villa! More tragic, one month before his death, he lost his wife who died of cancer and they never had the chance to enjoy the villa. It was his youngest son, Clarence Wyckoff who took possession the property afterwards In fact, the house is rumored to be haunted and now, it is listed for sale for USD 495 000 but it would require much more to restore.

2. Alledged haunted house listed for 1 euro on eBay (France)

Located in Arbresle, in the Rhône-Alpes region of France the house is a 110sqm home on a 350sqm block of land. Paranormal incidents have reportedly been witnessed in and around the house, including random knocks on windows, strange voices and murmurs, weird noises and moving objects. The seller who listed the house - has stated the house is haunted by spirits after a murder allegedly took place there during the 1950s. While the murder was never officially confirmed, as their bodies were never found, the former owners’ bodies were discovered to be buried in a nearby field. While many have questioned the authenticity of the eBay auction, the owner has stated is it real and anyone who believes in the spirit world should contact her.

3. The Maplecroft Estate (United States)

Located in Fall River, Massachusetts, the Maplecroft Estate is up for sale for double the price of similar houses in that particular area. Is it haunted ? Maybe, some would say while others would answer “definitely not”. What makes it so famous is the fact that Lizzy Borden has lived there till her death in 1927 at the age of 66. She was in fact famously acquitted of her father and stepmother’s murder in 1892. 4 years later, she moved to Maplecroft Estate and lived there till her death. The place is so creepy that many people say that it is haunted. The reason: Lizzy Borden’s funeral was held in the house! Basically 100% fact that her ghost in within the house! Listed at the price of USD 650 000, the house includes 7 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a grand entry foyer, 2 sunroofs, 7 fireplaces. The current owner, Robert Dube bought the house 30 years ago for USD 60 000 claims that he was moving because he was downsizing…Is he telling the whole truth? God knows…

4. Kimball Castle (United States)

This tormented-looking castle located in Gilford, New Hampshire, United States overlooks Lake Winnipesaukee. It was constructed by railroad magnate Benjamin Ames Kimball from 1897-1899 who spent at that time, the sum of USD 50 000. Along with incomparable views and acres of landscaped gardens, there are stone walls that weave around the property all the way to the water. The spooky property includes 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms over a land surface area of 3980 square-foot. According to the actual owner, the property is “filled with ghosts. There were doors opening and closing for no reason, as well as the presence of a figure in the living room. Even an episode of Ghost Hunters, a Syfy channel show, was recorded in the castle…The property was listed for USD 995 000 and townspeople are hoping for a promoter to rescue and turn it into a 5-star resort…who’s next?

5. Blairsden Mansion(United States)

Constructed in 1903 in Peapack-Gladstone, New Jersey by stock market tycoon Clinton Ledyard Blair, this eerie mansion is believed to be haunted. After his death in 1949, his heirs could not afford to upkeep it and sold to an order of nuns, the Sisters of Saint John Baptist who ran an orphanage on the property. One day, a horrible bloody massacre took place there torn up dissembled bodies of all the nuns were discovered as well as the drowned bodies of all 25 orphans in the nearby lake. The corpse of the Mother Superior was later found and it was concluded that she committed suicide after the horrible slaughter.

The legend says that there are still 2 ghosts haunting the place; one warning ghost to scare away trespassers and the spectre of the Mother Superior trying to attract visitors to the mansion to torture and kill them just like the nuns! Nobody knows for sure whether or not the Blairsden Mansion is really haunted. Some swear that they have seen ghosts with their eyes while others claim that that entire story is unproven. The property stands over 34 acres of land with 38 rooms including 34 bedrooms, 19 bathrooms and 2 garages. It was listed in the mid 2000’s for over USD 6 million.

Even if haunted houses have always existed since time immemorial, many people don’t believe in such issues and rather more rational. Concerning Mauritius, though many stories or tales about haunted houses and places are very common, there are very few recorded real estate transactions regarding haunted properties. According to Laval Savreemootoo, President of l’Association de l’immobilier (Real Estate Association), “there is no haunted house sold or bought within the real estate sector in Mauritius.” On the other hand, the Reverend Liva Adriatsinba of Anglican Church of Beau Bassin expressly states that “haunted houses exist, it is a fact!” It’s now up to you to draw your conclusions…
