Obtaining the new Mauritian biometric identity card: what you should know!

The issue of the new Mauritian biometric identity card shall start on the 1st of October 2013 and last till September 2014. This project bearing the name of Mauritius National Identity Scheme worth 1,1 billion MRU is led by the Prime Minister’s Office in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, Singapore Cooperation Enterprise (SCE), CrimsonLogic Pte Ltd and NEC Asia Pacific Pte Ltd. It provides for the distribution of some 920 000 new cards to Mauritian citizens.

Registration for obtaining the new card will be carried out by age groups as follows :

• Between 18 and 22 years old – October to November 2013
• Between 23 to 33 years old – December 2013 to January 2014
• Between 34 to 44 years old – February to March 2014
• Between 45 to 55 years old – April to May 2014
• Over 56 years old – June to July 2014

Please note that registration between the above-mentioned till September 2014 is free. To do so, ID Conversion Centres will be available over the island in: Port-Louis, Quatre Bornes, Rose-Hill, Ebène, Mahébourg, Chemin Grenier, Vacoas, Centre de Flacq, Goodlands et Bambous.

Required documents:

• Old identity card
• Birth certificate
• Marriage certificate (if applicable)
Important: No need to produce a birth certificate of less than 3 months. Fingerprints will be collected during registration. Holders will have to wait at least 2 weeks for new card delivery once registration done.
