The current trend of the concept "Maurice Ile durable” now extends to the building. The Mauritian, sensitized on the issue, and expatriates who are already integrated in their way of life, seek more "eco-friendly" habitat.

Black River region is particularly well suited to this trend: preserving the exceptional quality of life of Mauritius is at the heart of the concerns of many developers. They also give the tone of competing ideas in the fields of ecology, energy saving and environmental protection. Matala, a bioclimatic project in Black River has been designed by the architect himself "enfant du pays" which has a perfect knowledge of the local climate. It sought to draw and position the villas in order to take maximum advantage of natural energy: flat roofs promote excellent insulation and large openings were thought to provide natural ventilation and a light maximum. Andrew Smith, General Manager of the project, confirmed that foreigners, especially Europeans who invest in Mauritius, are sensitive to these energy savings. Some have even requested the addition of photovoltaic panels on their house. Recovery of rain water is not left, the site should become an example in this regard.

Green roofs are also on the rise, the shopping center Nautica, the proposed Tower Bridge in Port Louis and others have already adopted this technique. IOREC also adopted this green attitude in his projects: for example with the Les Hauts Champs project which will transform Piton in an environmentally friendly green neighborhood. Plants uprooted for the construction will be transplanted, rainwater reused and intelligent use of natural ventilation, solar water heaters, light bulbs, and locally manufactured materials... all these elements are found in the most of their projects.

Even the offices are getting into this. The new facility of MCB in St John in particular shows with full double glass partition in front allowing maximum penetration of natural light. In addition to reducing its own consumption, the building is also energy supplier through its coverage of photovoltaic panels. Others are also establishing their ecological gesture such as the Business Hub Junction, surrounded by nature and that recovers rainwater or New Custom House, which has opted for the double partition for better energy conservation.

These initiatives are encouraged by the Green Loan Scheme of the French Development Agency in association with banks like MCB, SBM, Mascarene Bank and Standard Bank, although the willingness of professionals is here, the high cost of facilities is often a major obstacle. The arrival in 2012 of new eco-friendly cement could reduce construction costs and make the green revolution within reach of more buyers.
