Tamarin, in the heart of the cosmopolitan region of western Mauritius

Published on the

Tamarin is a seaside village on the west coast of Mauritius. Former chief town of the Rivière Noire district, it is a tourist destination and also very popular with surfers.

Back to the origins of this picturesque village

In the past, the Dutch gave the name ’Molucque Reede’ (Baie aux Huîtres) to Tamarin. Then, the French give it the name of Bras de Mer of the Tamarin, while the black river became the Rivière du Tamarin, due to the tamarind trees that abounded in the region. This tree originated in India was introduced on the island by the Dutch, and propagated by the French.

A breathtaking sunset

The beach of Tamarin, its lagoon and its bay are undoubtedly its strong assets. Rather quiet during the week, it is densely populated during the weekends: the inhabitants of the village and the fishermen meet tourists, tourist operators and surfers in a relaxed and convivial atmosphere.

All come together at night on the beach, renowned for its spectacular sunsets because of its privileged location and its exposure to the west. Many Mauritians come for an aperitif while admiring the colours of the sky. While some, especially the young ones, practice the slackline between the filaos on the beach, others simply enjoy the sun and the sea.

The Surfers Paradise!

A true paradise for the surfers

The Tamarin lagoon is not as clear as the neighbouring beaches because of the river that flows into it and separates the bay in two. Despite everything, it is worth the trip with its incredible scenery and bohemian aura.

The fun of surfing in Tamarin

If the lagoon attracts as much, it is for its superb waves acclaimed by the surfers and valued since the seventies thanks to The Forgotten Island of Santosha. It is a film about surfing and realised by Larry and Roger Yates. It was a hit among the community of the surfers.

The most confirmed are happy to face the dreaded reef waves. As for the amateurs, they must be careful to the sea currents, often very strong. This is also the case for the fans of the stand-up paddle, who come to practice their favourite sport in Tamarin.

The Bay of Tamarin

Photographers in search of wild beauty must absolutely make a detour through the open bay, lined with mangroves, into which flows the Rivière du Rempart. This is a nice step not to be neglected.

With their camera, photographers can capture the mountain of the Rempart and the Tower of Tamarin, among others.

Swim with dolphins

The Bay of Tamarin is also famous for gathering a large concentration of dolphins blowers and long beaks. Several operators bring their clients closer to these animals on board their boats.

On the other hand, it is worth waking up very early to admire the dolphins: from the twilight, they move away from the coast of Tamarin to go hunting. Alas, to see the dolphins is a controversial subject. The visitors, too eager, are disturbing these so sympathetic marine mammals.

The spectacular Tamarin Falls

The impressive Tamarin Falls (Tamarin Falls), also known as the Seven Waterfalls is situated close to the village. If you decide to go there, it is strongly advised to be accompanied by a guide to reach the waters that pour into the heart of a luxurious vegetation.

Quite sportive, the walk is worth the detour and even allows to enjoy a vivifying massage under the waterfall! However, despite their name, one can access the falls of Tamarin from Quatre-Bornes or the village of Henrietta, and not from Tamarin.

Les Salines, the vestiges of the past

Tamarin has built a solid reputation thanks to its salt pans, where tons of salt were once produced annually to meet the needs of the local population.

In the past, Les Salines...

Indeed, in the past, swimming with dolphins or swimming in the Tamarin waterfall were far from being the only attractions in the area. Previously, at dawn, one could observe the saunières with gloves and boots in the process of brushing salt and forming small pyramids. Unfortunately, the importation of salt accelerated the fall of the salt works. Since December 2015, the latter are no more than empty basins of stone...

Real estate in Tamarin

In a few years, Tamarin has metamorphosed. The village has experienced an impressive real estate boom: hotels, luxury residences and shops have definitely changed what was once a peaceful fishing village composed mainly of mainly of straw huts. Many well-to-do foreigners and Mauritians have chosen to make their place of residence.

At the northern entrance of the village, there is Place Cap Tamarin Shopping Center, a shopping mall with various shops, banks, a pharmacy and the Shoprite supermarket, etc. Just a step further, sports enthusiasts will meet regularly at Riverland Tamarin, a club with tennis courts, beach volleyball and a swimming pool among others.

Real estate in Tamarin will take another boom with the arrival of Cap Tamarin Smart City built on a plot of 105 arpents and in a privileged setting.
