Located in the district bearing the same name, Port-Louis is the capital city of Mauritius. It encounters a high concentration of activities all year long and is swarmed with people during weekdays. From the most rustic to the most modern ones, Port-Louis’s discovery can be done through different aspects. Culture, art and shopping are merged so as to give an almost complete representation of the Mauritian diaspora.

The Caudan Waterfront
Restaurants, shops, casino and cinema places the Caudan Waterfront as one of the main touristic destination of the capital city. Shopaholics will find happiness into the different jewelleries and luxury shops found there. The Caudan Waterfront is also well known for its ’Kraft Market’ where typical Mauritian products are sold. Through its new ’Allée des Artistes’, the Caudan Waterfront represents a platform for cartoonists, painters, musicians and even carvers. Their presence allows local art’s promotion and distraction for visitors.

The Blue Penny Museum is also found at the Caudan Waterfront. This museum offers an excellent insight of the Mauritian history through its exposition rooms and its detailed explanations. The souvenir shop display products inspired from the museum’s themes.

Chinatown

In the heart of Port-Louis city centre is found a high and imposing arch. This is how Chinatown is distinguished. This area marks the presence of the Chinese community in Mauritius through its typical restaurants and its numerous traditional businesses. Chinatown is also famous for its annual festival held in April during which Chinese music, dances and calligraphies are promoted. The dishes and the articles are available at promotional prices during this particular event.

The Aapravasi Ghat
The Aapravasi Ghat is among the UNESCO’s world heritage list. This historical site marks the arrival of Indian indentured labourers to Mauritius. Visiting its ruins allow an insight of a key event of the history of Mauritius.

Port-Louis Market

Port-Louis market is a noisy, colourful and full of fragranced place. Fruits, vegetables, spices and local products are found there. Always full of people, Port-Louis market offers an utmost rustic aspect of the Mauritian culture. From the merchant loudly selling his products to the tourist while meeting the shopping inhabitants, the Port-Louis market are numerous and peculiar.

The Champ de Mars

Being the unique racecourse of Mauritius, the Champ de mars attracts much people during week-ends, uniting horseracing fans and families. Those wanting more comfortable visits may visit the Crown Lodge, a VIP salon specially made for a glamorous experience of the Champ de Mars.

The Jummah Masjid

Located in the city centre, the Jummah Masjid is described as one of Mauritius most beautiful religious sites. It is known for its special architecture dating from 1850. Its courtyard welcomes many visitors throughout the year. However visits are not allowed on Fridays and during the Ramadan.
