On 29th June, Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth laid the foundation stone for the construction of 224 social housing units.

The housing units will be built by New Social Living Development Ltd (NSLD) at La Brasserie on a 10-arpents at a cost of Rs 612 million. The project, scheduled for completion in September 2024, includes new utilities such as rainwater harvesting, solar panels and waste disposal systems. Green spaces, car parks, a mini-market, sewers and a children’s playground will also be part of the project.

About twenty of these units will be allocated to people on the social register and those at the bottom of the social ladder.

Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister emphasised that the construction of social housing remains one of his priorities, and that he will spare no effort to ensure that the first phase of the project is completed on schedule.

At the outset, the government had planned to build 12,000 homes for the less privileged, but due to unforeseen circumstances the project was scaled back to 8,000 units.
