The smart city of Uniciti aims at creating a vibrant and inclusive ecosystem. The critical situation of the pandemic at the beginning of the year, as well as the lockdown and the closing of borders, have proven to Mauritians the importance of self-sufficiency and local consumption when it comes to food. As an aftermath of this observation, the Agrinnovation department of Medine–which produces and distributes fruits and vegetables of the Jardins de Medine brand– has willingly shared its expertise in the agricultural field. Cultivating your own garden
Families of Bambous, beneficiaries of NGOs of Quartier de Lumière, École Familiale de l’Ouest and Centre d’Amitié… All have had the opportunity of attending a training workshop with regards to cultivating vegetables. 200 pumpkin and basil seedlings were also offered on this occasion… This wave of compassion and mutual aid was made possible thanks to the support of the Medine Horizons Foundation.
From soil preparation and planting seedlings to learning the basics for the preparation of a homemade natural compost, and ecological tips to prevent unwanted devastation… All these were taught in the yard of these NGOs, which have previously prepared a plot of land for the activity. A total of 29 beneficiaries (representing 18 families), as well as 11 members of the organisations, were able to learn and better understand the steps to cultivate a vegetable patch at home. An initiation led by Nivershee Theeroovengadum, an agronomist at Medine Agriculture, as well as two collaborators and members of the Medine Horizons Foundation.
The agronomist emphasises: “The distribution of young plants, reinforced by a training session in agronomic techniques, has enabled families to understand that they can cultivate their own vegetable gardens, regardless of how much space is available”.
Moreover, Micheline Auguste–beneficiary of the NGO–is delighted with this training. She believes it is a great way to save money and yet have products right in our garden!

The real estate pole of the Medine group
