Mauritius can claim to be the most peaceful country of the African continent according to the study of Global Peace Index 2016 published on 10 June by the Institute of Economics and Peace, an Australian think tank.

In order to establish this ranking, where Mauritius ranks first, 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators, evaluating primarily three areas were considered. It is the degree of militarization of States, the security level of a company and the extent of internal or international conflicts. Thus, at African level, Mauritius, a nice place to spend your holidays, is first, followed by Botswana and Madagascar.

The small pearl of the Indian Ocean also distinguishes itself in the world ranking, since it ranks 23rd place ahead of Italy, England, France and the United States, with a score of 1,559 points. The world ranking is dominated by Iceland, Denmark and Austria. The study highlights that there is an evolution “slightly less peaceful”, that is -0.53% in 2016 compared with 2015. Note that 163 countries are involved in the study of the Institute for the economy and the peace. Regarding the most dangerous countries, Syria is first ahead of South Sudan, Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia.
