Launched in March 1991 to plan and ensure the achievement of a social housing national program, the National Housing Development Company (NHDC) considers particularly the Mauritian society most unprivileged classes’ demands.

The number of houses built amounts to 12 000, while the total investment of those housing amounts to Rs 4 billion, only for the buildings. The construction of 10000 houses is expected in a near future. But what are the eligibility criteria and the conditions to benefit from those houses?

Every person wishing to benefit from the national program of social housing must go to the NHDC office from Monday to Friday between 8.30 and 16.30 to fill demand justification formalities and submit the following documents: birth certificate, national identity card, most recent pay slip or operation permit if the person is self-employed. A bank account statement shall also be asked.

If the applicant is married, he will have to present a marriage certificate and the birth certificate, the national identity card and the most recent pay slip or the companion’s operation permit. Furthermore, the divorced will have to provide a divorce certificate. The widowed will also have to submit the spouse’s death certificate and a pension proof (if applicable), underlines the NHDC.

To be eligible to obtain an NHDC housing unit, the applicants must fulfil a social criterion. They must own familial incomes between Rs10 000 and Rs25 000 but must not own any NHDC, CHA or other kind of housing. They must not neither possess a portion of residential land nor a portion of the state’s residential land. The applicants must neither appear in the list of the Mauritius Housing Company loan beneficiaries, sponsored by the government nor having received any sponsor from the government for foundation slab or for construction material purchase.

Green Construction

“NHDC residential complexes are erected by considering the natural environment necessary for the fulfilment of the families who will live there. Provision has been made for internal infrastructures, including the service roads, overall landscaping, sewage, drains, children playgrounds, electrical network and drinking water supply.” Underlines the NHDC.

The NHDC also planned additional services and support infrastructures such as nurseries, community centres, schools, etc. Hence, the NHDC entities have been conceived in such a way to favour social relations, good neighbourliness and community life.
